Andrea Abbatangelo is an artist working at the confluence of printmaking, performance, sculpture and her work is informed by disciplines including sociology, history and geography. She works with drawings and sculptures to explore the history and experience of places; in her artistic trajectory she has studied broadly from community-based anthropological practices, sociology theory, and sculpture - but always returned to the language of art to understand her work.
She is motivated to look at how emerging art practices can survive and hopefully thrive in the midst of austerity, political instability or even wars. Inevitably the contexts result in major changes within the arts and lead to major challenges for lesser known artists or projects that are currently still building their audiences, to succeed. During the years she has produced projects and exhibitited works for festivals such as La Biennale di Venezia (2011), Documenta (2012), Manifesta 11 at Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich etc
