The starting point of John Bradley's work is control and structure. The second part is random selection. John has a letterpress printing studio and creates his source material by hand-printing large wood type blocks before cutting up the printed sheets to use as collages. After carefully selecting and cutting up my source material of printed sheets, he lets chance take a hand. John places at random, the shapes onto a sheet following a drawn grid. He then lets chance decide the order and pattern of the collage by selecting the shapes blindly from an envelope or bag. These are not altered or moved to create a more 'aesthetic' result - where they fall is where they stay. The work produced is always unexpected but within pre-defined parameters of pattern and colour.
